Sebastián Segura

ARTIST’S PROFILE

Sebastián Segura is a Colombian visual artist and toy designer based in Kraków, Poland. His practice revolves around objects and their place within our physical and cultural reality, moving between visual arts, design and craftsmanship.

A central interest in his work is the toy, understood not as an exclusive object for children but as a broader cultural form and a particular way of relating to the material world. His practice explores what happens when the language of toys and play moves beyond its conventional audiences and contexts, becoming a means to approach memory, identity, storytelling and cultural belonging. His Colombian and Latin American background frequently enters this work through imagery, materials and references that are transformed rather than directly reproduced.

With a background in sculpture and jewelry, his practice is strongly connected to hands-on making and material experimentation. He works particularly with metals and wood, often incorporating movement, simple mechanisms and interaction. His work moves between toys, sculptural and wearable objects, and toy design, reflecting an interest in things that resist belonging entirely to one category.

He studied Visual Arts in Bogotá and later completed an MA at UMPRUM in Prague. He is currently based in Kraków, where he works as a toy designer at BAJO Wooden Toys while continuing his independent artistic practice and research into play, objects and material culture.

During my time at La Moissie, I want to explore how small objects acquire meaning through play, memory, ritual and cultural context. I am particularly interested in the region’s material heritage and in objects such as amulets, folk toys, devotional artifacts, tools and souvenirs. Through research, drawing and small-scale making, I hope to develop new playthings somewhere between artifact, toy and sculptural object.
