ARTIST’S PROFILE
Moonassi (Kim Dae-hyun, b. 1980, Seoul) is a South Korean artist who majored in Oriental Painting at Hongik University. He began his career in 2010 under the artist name Moonassi, a term derived from the Buddhist concept of ‘selflessness’ (無我), reflecting his desire to move beyond the self.
Moonassi explores the complexities of human relationships. Using a restrained palette of black and white, he combines traditional Meok (ink) with acrylic on Korean paper, emphasizing simplicity and introspection.
The dark backgrounds in his works often depicted as lakes, crevices, or abstract spaces create a surreal and dreamlike atmosphere, evoking an infinite inner landscape. Rather than limiting his artistic expression, the absence of color becomes a means of liberation, allowing viewers to engage more deeply with the essence of each piece.
Since his debut, Moonassi has held over a dozen solo exhibitions and participated in more than thirty group exhibitions worldwide, including in Seoul, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Oslo. His distinctive visual language continues to evolve, inviting contemplation on the nature of perception, identity, and connection.

“I will spend the four weeks at the La Moissie Creative Residency focusing on works for the exhibition opening in December. The works will continue my exploration of the nature of human emotions, expressed through metaphors of water, fire, wind, and earth. They will be created solely with black ink on paper. In addition, I plan to take daily walks in the beautiful natural surroundings of the residency and record the inspirations I receive each day through drawings.“
